Austrian Alpine Marriage Wardrobe (Bauernschrank), Dated 1837
Made for Maria Averin and inscribed with her name above the doors, this monumental pine wardrobe is a rare survival of the Bauernmalerei tradition of the Austrian Tyrol or Upper Bavaria. The original teal ground is decorated with four painted panels of flower-filled urns and bouquets wrapped in red bows, red-bordered moldings with gilded corner accents, a marbleized ochre cornice and base, and devotional IHS and Marian monograms. Original diamond-shaped brass escutcheons on both doors.
